Content pillars, content types, and funnel stages

Define content pillars, content types, and funnel stages in your workspace, assign them to projects, and use them to plan and report on your content.

Written by David Baum

A shared taxonomy gives your content program a common language. When every project carries the same three classifications, you can plan with intent, keep your mix balanced, and see at a glance how your content is distributed. Relato gives you three workspace-level classifications: content pillars, content types, and funnel stages. You define each one once, then assign them to your projects.

Content pillars

Content pillars are the recurring themes or topic areas your content ladders up to. They are the strategic buckets that hold your program together.

Examples: product education, customer stories, industry trends.

To create a content pillar, open your workspace settings and add a pillar with a name that describes the theme. To assign it, open a project and set its content pillar on the project.

Content types

A content type is the format or kind of a piece. It tells you what a project produces, so you can plan across formats and keep variety in your program.

Examples: blog post, newsletter, social post, case study.

To create a content type, open your workspace settings and add a type. To assign it, open a project and set its content type on the project.

Funnel stages

A funnel stage marks where a piece sits in the buyer journey. It helps you see whether your content supports every step a reader takes toward a decision.

Examples: awareness, consideration, decision.

To create a funnel stage, open your workspace settings and add a stage. To assign it, open a project and set its funnel stage on the project.

How they show up in reporting

Once you assign pillars, types, and funnel stages to your projects, they become filters and groupings across your workspace. You can filter or group projects by any of the three, and they feed reporting so you can see how your content is distributed across pillars, types, and funnel stages. This makes gaps easy to spot, for example a pillar with no active projects or a funnel stage that is thin on coverage.

Tips

  • Define all three at the workspace level before you build out projects, so every new project can be classified as you create it.

  • Keep the set small and clear. A short list of pillars, types, and stages is easier to apply consistently than a long one.

  • Set all three on each project. A project with every classification filled in gives you the fullest reporting.

FAQ

Can a project have a pillar, a type, and a funnel stage at the same time?

Yes. The three are separate classifications, so you set a project's pillar, type, and funnel stage independently on the project.

Do I have to assign all three to every project?

No. You can assign any of them on their own. Assigning all three gives you the most complete filtering and reporting.
